What are the different activities you use?
What is your favourite Literacy activity?
Welcome back everyone to what is hopefully another exciting term filled with lots of learning, lots of laughter and loads of fun! We have started off the term with a few changes to our weekly program with PE now changed to Wednesday, while Library and Art remain on Thursdays. We also have a different look to our Literacy block having introduced a modified 'Daily 5' program to allow the students to take some ownership over their learning and to provide some choice in the learning opportunities provided. One of the activities students completed last week as an introduction to the strategies we use when reading, was to analyse and observe the teachers reading strategies...that's right, MY reading strategies! Students used running record style observations of my reading and then discussed what they we are to tell about me as a reader! Take a look at some of the observations below! Do you use The Daily 5 in your classroom?

Watch the 'Three Little Pigs Advertisement' below and put your 'PERSUASIVE HAT' on! When you have finished watching, open either popplet or a pages document and list all of the reasons and evidence that support the Three Little Pigs or the wolf. Perhaps you might even like to try the Dragon Dictation app and record your ideas first by speaking. Once the app has translated your ideas into text you can then just copy and paste them into your pages doc! I have posted an example of a pages document to the left for you to look at for ideas. Enjoy! Here is some of our work on 'The three little pigs' saga What do you think?
Who is innocent and who is the victim? We would love to hear what you think! This week is all about leadership! So what does it mean to be a great leader? What qualities do great leaders have? Who do you look up to as a leader? For one of your reading activities this week you will need to watch the clip 'UN Youth' and answer the comprehension questions using the iPad apps 'Popplet' or 'Tools for Students'. Make sure that you listen carefully and respond with thought and detail....and don't forget to have capitals letters where needed and use punctuation correctly! 1. What does UN stand for?
2. Did you know that there was a UN for kids? Discuss what you learnt from the BtN UN Youth story. 3. What city did the youth representative for Australia visit to address the UN General Assembly? 4. How many countries are part of the United Nations? 5. Describe what the UN youth representative for Australia did on his tour around the country? 6. What sorts of issues did the kids of Australia talk about on the tour? 7. What would you do if you had the role of representing Australia’s youth at the UN? 8. Do you think it is important that the youth of Australia have a UN representative? Why or why not? 9. What concerns do you have about the future? 10. How has your thinking changed since watching this story? Recently ABC published a segment on BtN about the debate that keeps popping up around Australia Day regarding the Australian flag. Should we keep it or should it be changed to reflect the Australia we know today? This week in your reading rotations you will need to watch the short clip before contemplating the following questions: - Name three symbols on the Australian flag? - What country does the Union Jack come from? - Why does Australia have the Union Jack on its flag? - What is the Southern Cross? - Why was an extra point added to the Federation Star symbol? - What sorts of places would you see the Australian flag flying? - Why do some people want to change the Australian flag? - Do you think the Australian flag should be changed? Explain your answer. - What colours and symbols do you think best represent Australia? Using the app Popplet, create a mind map of your answers. Make sure you write full sentences and add as much detail as you can! |
