After watching the clip in class, the children were amazed at what Caine was able to do with just cardboard, creativity and a lot of persistence! They were so impressed that they begged to create their own arcade....how could I refuse! So that's where our adventure began....students formed groups and began the designing process. They used the iPads and computers to look up and research other arcade games and watched Caine's Arcade again and again to see all of the different games he was able to make. Then construction began! I must say it has been very hard to put up with cardboard boxes filling up the room, not to mention the mess, but it has been worth every minute to see the kids thoroughly immersed in what they were doing. They worked cooperatively; they designed; they had to use trial and error to ensure their games worked; and most importantly they were SUPER creative.....something that we can often be stifled as children get older! So all of this for what you ask?? Well our goal is to finish the games and have a '5/6 Arcade' and to invite each class in our school to come and play.....and hopefully by reading and watching this we have inspired another group to get CREATIVE!
For those people that haven't ever heard of Caine, he is (was) a 9 year old boy who went to work with his dad each weekend and to keep himself from getting bored he began to build arcade games out of cardboard. Eventually Caine had made so many arcade games that he decided to use an old room on his dad's building to create 'Caine's Arcade'. It is an amazing, inspirational story that shows creativity at its best, and a level of perseverance and persistence that will astound you. It also shares the difference that one person can make to another persons life through sheer kindness.
